Hurricane High Wrestling

Coach Lee Cummings

Lee was proudly raised in Spencer, WV and graduated from Roane County High in 2000. He is a graduate of West Virginia State and currently teaches health at Hurricane High School. Lee is married to a very lovely and understanding Laura Cummings since 2006. They have a daughter Laurel (6) and a son Louden (4).

Coach Levi Harris

Levi came to Hurricane one year ago after graduating from Marshall University.  Growing up in the greater Miami Valley in Dayton, Ohio. He is a 2008 Graduate of Greenville High school where he wrestled under coach John Schutts. Levi was a multiple time all-state wrestler while in high school, while being on a Greenville team that amassed a combined record of 67-5.  In 2009 he achieved all american status at NHSCA nationals. Levi resides happily in Hurricane with his girlfriend of four years Amanda. Currently works as a commercial insurance marketing representative for Federated Insurance. He is passionate about the development of the Hurricane wrestling program.

Coach Steve Rhodes

Resides in Scott Depot, WV.  Native of Ripley, WV.  1995 Graduate of Sheldon Clark High School in Inez, KY.  All-state wrestler at Ripley High School before moving to Kentucky.  All-state wrestler at Sheldon Clark High School in Kentucky.  Member of the 1995 state champion wrestling team at Sheldon Clark High School. 2nd year assisting with the program. Works as an attorney at Steptoe & Johnson PLLC.

Coach Clayton Burch

Clayton has resided in Hurricane since 2008. The 1992 graduate of Oak Glen High School is currently the Executive Director for the Office of Early Learning at the West Virginia Department of Education. Clayton has 4 children – all boys and is married to Tracy, who works with the Office of Special Education at the Cabell County Board of Education. A past wrestler of Coach Larry Shaw of the Oak Glen Golden Bears and state placer, Clayton is committed to assisting Hurricane wrestling coaches in establishing a comprehensive wrestling program youth through high school.

Coach Eric Ping

Eric grew up in lowell indiana, all state wrestler at lowell high school graduated in 95.  Wrestled at indiana university and the university of Indianapolis where he was a starter for three years and a captain for two. Works as a nurse practitioner at st marys in cardiac surgery.  Married to my wonderful wife Leslie with 4 children, three boys and one girl.

Duane Talley

Duane comes to us by way of Pasadena, Maryland.  He wrestled for Northeast HS and Coppin State University.  A State Runner in 1989, Duane returned to his high school as an assistant coach for 5 years before moving to West Virginia.  He has resided in Hurricane for 14 years and works as the Regional Manager of Ogden Directories. Duane has 5 kids, 2 daughters and 3 boys and is married to a very extraordinary and understanding Felicia. He has been coaching with Hurricane for 6 years now. He is an assistant at the middle school and coaches our youth program.  Duane has made possible as well as many other innovative ideas for our program.

Mike "Slick" Ellis

Slick was born and raised right here in Hurricane, WV. He is a 1965 graduate of Hurricane High before attending Marshall University. Slick taught regular and AP History at Hurricane High for 39 years before becoming the assistant principal 1 year previous to retiring. While at Hurricane High Slick was the wrestling coach for many years. He produced the most successful teams to date with many state placers and 5 state champions. Mike will be inducted into the WV State Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (Located in Stillwater Oklahoma) on October 28, 2012. Congratulations Mike Ellis.

Slick resides out Peach Ridge with his family nearby: 2 children and 5 grandchildren. He is our scorekeeper, writes wrestling articles for the paper, and administrator of our coaching committee.

John Beech

John is a 1981 graduate of Hurricane High. He arrived in Hurricane in 1978 from Caribou, Maine. After winning a state title in 1980 he got his education degree. John is known throughout the wrestling community for helping start new teams, run tournaments, and especially his coaching ability. He is currently a teacher and AD at Dunbar Middle School. Besides teaching and coaching John is an excellent cook/chef and well known for his comic ability. John has a daughter at Marshall University and he enjoys long walks.

Hank Dyer

Coach Dyer came to Hurricane from Northwest High School in Cincinnati. He quickly became acquaintances with John Beech and Mike Ellis before joining the wrestling team. After graduating in 1983 from Hurricane he became a school counselor. He has been at Hurricane Middle School now for 4 years. Coach has been a faithful assistant to Hurricane Middle Wrestling since its painful beginnings in 2006. He is married to the very lovely and understanding Jessie Dyer and lives in Teays Valley.
